Dried Blood Spot

Collecting Your Sample

Hand Hygiene
Wash your hands in warm, soapy water before beginning. Choose a fleshy fingertip and clean the area with a sterile wipe.

Preparing the Lancet
Twist and remove the thin yellow tip from the lancet. Each lancet is single-use only and contains a small spring-loaded needle.

Pricking Your Finger
Hold the lancet against your clean, dry fingertip and press to release the needle. Try to stay relaxed and avoid flinching.

Encouraging Blood Flow
Gently massage your finger (avoiding the tip) to encourage a large drop of blood. Wipe away the first drop with a sterile wipe.

Applying Blood to the Collection Card
Hold your fingertip above the circle on the collection card. Apply drops of blood from the centre outwards until the circle is fully filled and soaked through to the back.

Repeating if Needed
If the circle is not fully saturated, repeat the process using a new lancet on another finger until the circle is completely filled.
